(1854-1899)

Born in Meriwether County, William Yates Atkinson settled in Newnan after receiving a law degree from the University of Georgia in 1877.  Elected to the Georgia General Assembly in 1886, he served four terms in the House, becoming Speaker in 1892.  In the House, he helped establish Georgia Normal and Industrial College (now Georgia College and State University).  Elected to two terms as governor, he served from 1894-1898.  He championed progressive issues, hiring Georgia’s first salaried female state employee, Helen Dortch Longstreet, as Assistant State Librarian in 1894.  Atkinson died at age 44 and is buried in the Presbyterian section of Newnan’s Oak Hill Cemetery.

African-American Soldiers in Combat

Near Dalton on August 15, 1864, during the Civil War, the 14th United States Colored Troops (USCT), whose enlisted men were mostly former slaves, helped drive off a Confederate cavalry attack on the Western and Atlantic Railroad, U.S. General William T. Sherman’s main supply line during the Atlanta Campaign.  Later, on October 13, 1864, the 44th USCT was in a fort protecting the railroad through Dalton when the garrison commander surrendered to Confederate General John B. Hood.  In accordance with Confederate policy, many of the 600 captured black troops were returned to slavery.  Black troops rarely saw combat in Georgia, though nearly 200,000 African Americans served in the U.S. armed forces during the war.

The Battles for Atlanta

Between July and Sept. 1864, during the American Civil War, U.S. and Confederate armies fought five battles for control of Atlanta, the major manufacturing center and railroad hub of the Deep South.  Four battles took place inside the present-day I-285 perimeter:  Peachtree Creek (July 20), Bald Hill (July 22), Ezra Church (July 28) and Utoy Creek (Aug. 6).  Though most were Confederate defeats, these battles kept U.S. forces out of Atlanta for nearly six weeks.  At Jonesboro (Aug. 31- Sept. 1), the U.S. army cut the last railroad supply line into Atlanta, forcing the Confederates to evacuate. The fall of Atlanta on Sept. 2, 1864, assured the re-election of Abraham Lincoln and the final defeat of the Confederacy.

Georgia History Festival Trustees Gala

February 12, 2011

SAVE-THE-DATE

Saturday, February 12, 2011

Click here to reserve your seats!

The Georgia Historical Society’s premiere annual fund-raising event and the exciting finale of the Georgia History Festival is the annual Trustees Gala. Each year, this elegant and much-anticipated event draws Georgia’s top business and civic leaders to honor and pay tribute to the best our state has produced.

This year, GHS’s two-week commemoration of Georgia history—with an emphasis on the life and legacy of Festival Honoree Sequoyah, legendary creator of the Cherokee syllabary—culminates in a lavish banquet with the theme “Georgia Blues.” Guests will enter through a festively decorated juke joint atmosphere to an elegantly appointed ballroom for a sublime evening of dining and entertainment.

The highlight of the Gala is the induction by the Governor of the year’s Georgia Trustees, two Georgians who exemplify a lifetime of excellence in their work and philanthropic accomplishment. The 2011 Trustees, legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley and former U.S. Senator and global policy maker Sam Nunn, will be in attendance to receive their awards. Following the presentations, the new Trustees will engage in a moderated conversation, featuring questions on topics ranging from business to philanthropy to history and life philosophies.

GHS will hold a raffle of enviable items related to the evening’s theme, and live music and dancing will round out the night. Held in Savannah the weekend before Valentine’s Day, the 2011 Trustees Gala honors the service and accomplishments of the new Trustees, celebrates the founding of our state, and highlights the richness and diversity of Georgia history and its people.

The Georgia Trustees
In conjunction with the Governor’s Office, the Georgia Historical Society reconstituted the Georgia Trustees as a way of recognizing Georgians whose accomplishments and community service reflect the highest ideals of the founding body of Trustees.  The original Georgia Trustees, a governing body chartered and appointed by His Majesty King George II of England in 1732 to establish a new colony in North America, founded the Georgia colony upon the principle of Non Sibi, Sed Aliis, “Not for Self but for Others.” They established and governed the colony with this vision until their disbandment in 1752, after which Georgia became a royal colony. Reestablished in 2009, the Governor makes an annual appointment of new Trustees whose history-making accomplishments and service reflect the original Trustees’ ideals.

Don’t miss this event! Find out what happened at last year’s Gala, and go here to see what’s in store this year!
